Taking Great Interior Photos

Getting great property photos doesn’t mean spending thousands on a digital camera, or hours in front of your computer doctoring your photos. Here are a few simple tips to help you get the most out of your digital camera.

Use a Tripod

Use a tripod for interiors. Cameras are less sensitive to light than we are. House interiors are actually quite dark (between 100 to 1000 times darker than outside!), and so the the camera’s shutter has to stay open longer to get a good exposure, and this increases the risk of blurry photos. Use a tripod to hold the camera steady and avoid blurry images due to movement. An inexpensive tripod can cost as little as $30, and can improve the quality of your interior photos dramatically.

Suppessed Flash

Most small camera flashes are designed for social situations, and will fire the flash when there is insufficient light to get a sharp hand-held picture. If you are photographing a room and the flash fires, this should tell you to improve the room’s lighting, or risk a too-dark image. Ideally you should deactivate the camera’s flash and use a tripod.
